The states of Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Acre, Rondônia and parts of Amazonas and Mato Grosso are now internationally recognized as areas free of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) without vaccination. This status was recognized on May 27 by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), in a virtual ceremony at the 88th General Session of the OIE's World Assembly of Delegates, in Paris, France.

Paraná obtained national recognition from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock in August of last year and was awaiting OIE validation, which also recognized requests from Rio Grande do Sul and Block I (Acre, Rondônia and part of Amazonas and Mato Grosso). Besides foot-and-mouth disease, the entity gave the seal of approval to Paraná as an independent area free of classical swine fever.

The international recognition will help open markets for pork and other animal products from the states involved, with the possibility of selling to countries that pay more for the product, such as Japan, South Korea, and Mexico.
