The situation over the swine fever outbreak in Russian is not improving, Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov said on Tuesday.

“The fever is spreading beyond Russia’s southern regions into the central and north-western federal districts,” he told a meeting of the government’s agricultural commission.

Under the national law on veterinary medicine, the ministry of agriculture is authorized to take any measures necessary to contain swine fever outbreaks, including quarantine. He ordered to see to it that farmers are paid adequate compensation in case they have to engage in breeding other types of animals because of the swine fever outbreak. Farmers, in his words, “must be paid adequate compensation rather be forced to give up swine breeding.”
