The California Department of Food and Agriculture has posted new guidance documents regarding the Implementation of California Proposition 12 (Prop 12).

Questions and Answers Related to Pork Sales in the Wake of the 2023 Supreme Court Decision

This document answers frequently asked questions such as: When did Prop 12 go into effect? What do I do with noncompliant whole pork meat in inventory? Who enforces Prop 12 prohibitions in regard to pork sales and animal confinement? What are the next steps for distributors and retailers to ensure compliance?

Sow Housing Guide

Under Prop 12, an enclosure cannot prevent a sow from being able to lie down, stand up, fully extend their limbs, and turn around freely within their enclosure. At least 24 square feet of usable floorspace per sow is required. This document includes visual examples of compliant and non-compliant housing.
