The Superior Court for Sacramento County in California ruled to halt enforcement of Proposition 12 (Prop 12 or the law) because the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) is more than two years late finalizing regulations.

The ruling delays enforcement until 180 days after the final rules go into effect.

Background:

Proposition 12 requires that livestock animals in confinement in California be housed under specific standards in regards to freedom of movement and minimum floor space. It also bans the sale of uncooked pork in California that comes from animals (or the direct offspring of animals) kept in conditions that do not comply with the standards, regardless of the state in which the animals are born or raised.
