Portugal: the number of pig slaughterings increases

During the first semester of 2014 a total of 2,491,870 pigs were slaughtered, and this represents an increase by 1.3%.

According to the provisional data published by the Portuguese National Institute of Statistics (INE), during the first semester of 2014 a total of 2,491,870 pigs were slaughtered, and this represents a rise by 1.3% in comparison with the same period in 2013.

With respect to the importation of pork, during the first half of 2014 a total of 44,036.6 tonnes of fresh and refrigerated meat (-1.8%), and 17,532,9 tonnes of frozen meat (+38%) were imported. With respect to the Portuguese exports, a total of 7,087.8 tonnes of fresh and refrigerated meat (+9.3%) and 6,192.9 tonnes of frozen meat (-7.8%) were exported.
