Portugal: increase in the number of pigs slaughtered

The total number of pigs slaughtered in Portugal during the first quarter of this year is 1,306,373, representing an increase of 5.7% over the same period last year.

According to the SIMA Bulletin, the total number of pigs slaughtered in Portugal during the first quarter of this year is 1,306,373, representing an increase of 5.7% over the same period last year (1,236,033 pigs).

As per the total weight, it goes up to 93,594 tonnes, a 6.1% more than the first quarter of 2014 (88,195 tonnes).

By age categories, a total of 195,612 piglets have been slaughtered, representing an increase of 21.5% compared to the first quarter of 2014, 1,100,612 fattening pigs, an increase of 3.3% over the same period of 2014 (1,065,074 animals), and 10,149 cull sows (1.4% more than in 2014 with 10,011 animals).
