To ensure that veterinarians and producers properly administer supplies and medications to both terrestrial and aquatic animals for consumption, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development encourages the use of good practices in production units, which contribute to preserving food safety and combating antimicrobial resistance.

Through the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica), the federal agency heads a working group with health sector agencies to design strategies and programs that result in actions to improve the production of healthy and safe food for Mexican consumers.

This inter-institutional work also aims to update official Mexican standards that contain the specifications for regulating chemical, pharmaceutical, biological and feed products for the use and consumption of animals.

Similarly, the group proposes establishing guidelines for the classification and prescription of veterinary pharmaceutical products for their control and to minimize the risk involved in the use of some active ingredients.

Senasica runs informational campaigns aimed at producers to promote certification of good practices and reduce the risk of animal products containing physical, chemical or microbiological contaminants, and thus prevent food-borne illnesses.
