The Official Journal of the Federation published last week the agreement regarding the fresh, refrigerated and frozen pork import quota and tariff quota.

The measure was established with the aim of helping to stabilise the market, avoiding the shortages in the supply of pork and the upsetting due to the increase in prices of these products as a result of an insufficient national supply caused by the imposition of tariffs on the imports of USA meat as a response to the decision of the USA of imposing tariffs to the imports of Mexican steel and aluminium as of June 1st.

Between 2010 and 2017, the USA represented 89.2% of the Mexican pork imports.

The quota will allow to import 350,000 tonnes of pork free of tariffs under the direct allocation mechanism with its modality “First come, first served”.
