On December 20, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) announced its decision to add eight prefectures (Ibaraki, Tochigi, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Niigata, Kyoto and Nara) to the recommended list to vaccinate healthy hogs against classical swine fever (CSF). CSF was detected in Japan for the first time in 26 years in September 2018. The disease has since been detected in nine prefectures resulting in the cull of approximately 152,000 hogs as of December 26, 2019. FAS/Tokyo estimates Japan’s annual hog production at around 17 million head.

Twelve prefectures were approved to begin vaccinations of healthy hogs in October 2019 (JA2019- 0186). Six prefectures (Toyama, Ishikawa, Fukui, Gifu, Aichi and Mie) began vaccinations on October 25.
