During the last inspection carried out in Sardinia by the Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) of the European Commission, the need for fighting against the illegal presence of pigs at the farms has been reaffirmed. In fact, the goal of eradicating the disease in Sardinia (present since 1978) is influenced, to a great extent, if not exclusively, by the presence of illegal pigs in the island, the raising of pigs under free-range conditions, the inappropriate use of the state pastures, and the total lack of control of the pigs in the protected areas.

This situation generates difficulties in the trade within the EU, and it implies a serious obstacle in the negotiation process between the EU and third countries that use as the presence of the disease in Europe as an important argument.
