Increase in the pig slaughterings in Portugal

Between January and September the pig slaughterings, as well as the weights at slaughter and the exports, have grown in Portugal.

According to the data published by the GPP, during the 9 first months of 2016, the pig slaughterings have increased by 1.7% (4,205,714 heads in 2016 versus 4,136,572 in 2015). These numbers are broken down as follows: 3,337,588 fattening pigs (+0.3%), 844,213 piglets (+7.8%) and 23,913 breeders (-7.9%).

The weights at slaughter have also grown slightly (in pigs and piglets) by 0.7% and 8.8% respectively.

Regarding trade, between January and September 2016, the imports of pigs and pork decreased by 15.4%, and the exports grew by 11.1%, with a total of 161,561.9 tonnes imported in 2016 (191,062.3 tonnes in 2015) and 53,803.9 tonnes exported (48,425.9 tonnes in 2015).
