The Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture; Ms Julia Klöckner, has reported that the EU has approved the German animal welfare labelling proposal. The criteria have been initially developed for pork.

The draft will have to be sent to the Bundestag, but it must be completed before that. The related ordinance is currently being drafted, and among other things it describes the specific requirements and criteria. It is expected that all the legislative process is ended by late 2019, so the first labelled products con be bought by mid- to late 2020.

It is a voluntary labelling scheme that will tell the consumers that the product that they are consuming comes from animals raised under animals welfare requirements that exceed the minimal legal standards.
