On February 18, 2022, the Federal Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) submitted to the EU Commission their proposal for the redesignation of highly nitrate-polluted regions ("red areas") in Germany.

This proposal had previously been prepared in several discussions with the EU Commission and the German federal states. If the proposed draft were implemented, the area would increase from about 2 million hectares to about 2.7 million hectares of agricultural land, which corresponds to a 33.8% increase in red areas.
