Germany: pig slaughterings in 2018

Year-to-year pig slaughterings dropped by 3%.

According to the data of the Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis), in 2018, year-to-year meat production in commercial abattoirs decreased by 1.5%, reaching 8.0 million tonnes.

In the case of pork, with a total of 56.6 million animals slaughtered in 2018, year-to-year pig slaughterings dropped by 3.0%. The greatest decrease was that of imported pigs (-17.9%). During the same period, the number of slaughtered domestic pigs fell by 1.9%. In general, this reduced pork production by 2.9%, reaching 5.3 million tones.
