Germany allows the castration of piglets without anaesthesia for two more years

The transition period for the prohibition of the castration of piglets of less than 7 days of age without anaesthesia is extended for two years.

Last Friday, the Bundestag passed the bill presented by the CDU/CSU and SPD on the Fourth Amendment of the Law on Animal Welfare (19/5522), that extends for two more years the transition period for the prohibition of the castration of piglets without anaesthesia, that was to come into force as of January 1st, 2019.

The bill was passed with 421 votes in favour, 142 against and 87 abstentions.

Also, the Government will have to provide a legal ordinance by late May 2019 that allows the farmers to anaesthetise with isofluorane. By the end of June 2019, the technical contents of the training courses needed will be developed, and the materials and training courses will be prepared.
