Pig farmers still show a great interest in the German initiative ‘Initiative Tierwohl’ (“Animal Welfare Initiative’.) During the registration period, that has just ended, 4,157 farms with a total of more than 26 million pigs signed up to participate in the second stage of the programme of the Animal Welfare Initiative during the 2018-2020 period. This means that the number of participating farms has increased by 70% with respect to 2017, and that the measures for improving animal welfare will be applied to the double of pigs. This growing interest for the initiative shows the importance for the farmers of their animals’ welfare.

With these new registration figures, the Animal Welfare Initiative gets closer to its aim of improving the welfare of the highest possible number of animals. In Germany, as of 2018, more than 23% of the fattening pigs will come from farms that participate in the Animal Welfare Initiative.

All the farmers that have signed up will be able to participate, and no farms will be left in the waiting list. This is possible thanks, mainly, to the food retail sector, that in the future will increase its contribution from €85 million to €130 million.

The success in the first three years and the high numbers of registrations confirm the farmers’ great commitment with the improvement of animal welfare and the confidence of all the actors in the alliance of the sector.
