The German veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of Aujeszky's disease affecting dogs in Weimar-Land (Thuringen).

Aujeszky´s disease has not occurred in domestic pigs in Germany since February 2000. Since 2002, there have been no vaccinations against Aujeszky´s disease.

Pursuant to the requirements set out in chapter 8.2. of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code, biosecurity measures are being taken to prevent the spread of Aujeszky´s disease virus from wild boar to domestic pigs. These are listed in detail in the national ordinance concerning hygiene in pig husbandry, with compliance being checked in regular intervals by the relevant veterinary authorities.

Note by the OIE's Animal Health Information Department: This notification of Aujeszky’s disease in dogs should have no effect on the previous status of Germany regarding this disease for trade of pig meat or other pig products.
