Soon, a ministerial decree prohibiting piglet castration without anaesthetic will be issued, at the end of 2021. It will also make water supply systems and access to manipuable materials mandatory for all types of pig farms. Farmers will have one year to comply with all requirements before sanctions are imposed.

In more general terms, a decree will soon be presented to the Council of State to move towards a ban on all painful practices in animal husbandry and to be able to impose a standard of animal welfare on farm animals.

Animal transport conditions will also be reinforced by increasing controls on long-distance transport, by empowering private veterinarians. The aim is to ensure 5% controls during the loading of animals. Penalties will be extended in the event of non-compliance with the rules, such as the absence of a certificate of competence, the use of an unauthorised or non-compliant vehicle, or the absence of a valid journey log.
