First cases of African Swine Fever in Moldova

The outbreaks have been confirmed in Donduseni district, north of the country.

OIE has confirmed the presence of African swine fever (ASF) for the first time in Moldova. The outbreaks have been confirmed in Donduseni district, north of the country. Both outbreaks have occurred in a backyard farms.

Outbreak 1: In a backyard with ten fattening pigs of around 80 kg each (eight-nine months old), six pigs died from 17 to 20 September 2016 and the owner did not notify the Competent Authority. Two pigs had typical signs of African swine fever (anorexia, increased temperature and apathy) and two pigs left had no symptoms. On 22 and 23 September 2016 the pigs died with signs of disease, samples were taken. On 26 September the two healthy pigs were destroyed. Sampling was performed on 23 and 24 September 2016 and the Republican Center for Veterinary Diagnosis sent them to a European Union Reference Laboratory. Results were received on 3 October 2016 from the European Union Reference Laboratory for African swine fever (EURL-ASF) in Spain, INIA-CISA (National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research - Technology Center for Animal Health Research); the samples were found positive using Ag detection ELISA and real-time PCR.

Outbreak 2: In a backyard with three fattening pigs of around 25 kg each (five months old), one pig died on 24 September 2016. The two pigs left had typical signs of African swine fever (anorexia, increased temperature and apathy). On 26 September 2016, one of the pigs died and on 28 September 2016 the second one died. Sampling was performed on 26 September 2016 and the Republican Center for Veterinary Diagnosis sent them to a European Union Reference Laboratory. Results were received on 3 October 2016 from the European Union Reference Laboratory for African swine fever (EURL-ASF) in Spain, INIA-CISA (National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research - Technology Center for Animal Health Research); the samples were found positive using Ag detection ELISA and real-time PCR.
