European Union: slight increase of the pig meat exportations

The European pig meat exportations have remained stable during the first nine months of year 2013, with a slight growth by 0.3%.

The data about the exportations of European pig meat during the first nine months of 2013 remain stable, with a slight growth by 0.3 % in comparison with the same period of year 2012. In total, between January and September 2013, a total of 2,289,784 tonnes were exported. The main destination of the exports is Russia, with a 24.5 % of the total amount (560,273 tonnes), although with a fall by 3 %. Russia is followed by China and Hong Kong, with an amount, with respect to the total tonnage, of 21.6 % and 12.4%, respectively. In the specific case of China, the European exportations of pig meat have increased by 20 %. On the other hand, the important rise of the exports to the Philippines (+37 %) and the fall of the exports to South Korea (-35 %) stand out.

With respect to the imports, they follow the trend of the last years, with a fall by 7.9%. During the first nine months of 2013 the imports have been 25,733 tonnes. Switzerland and Chile still are the main suppliers, with 51 % and 17 % of the total amount, but with decreases by 13 % y 18 %, respectively. The rise of the importations of pig meat from Serbia, with a volume of 2,194 tonnes and a rise by 21 % must be highlighted.
