In the context of the application of Council Regulation (EC) No 1099/2009, the Commission performed a series of audits in the EU countries. These audits identified the need for guidance documents.

In October 2017 the Commission published a 'Study on the preparation of best practices on the protection of animals at the time of killing'. This study was the basis of a set of factsheets which translate the complex information of the study into a simple, concise and accessible product to the relevant audiences.

The factsheets are designed to help workers in small slaughterhouses and farmers to better understand and apply the EU legislation on the protection of animals at the time of killing.
