In 2018, more than a third of the Danish pig farms were fined at least once due to the unfulfillment of the animal welfare regulations, according to the data provided by the Danish Food and Veterinary Agency after carrying out an inspection on more than 300 farms in 2018. The number of serious unfulfillments also grew. The Ministry considers that these figures are unacceptable.

Most of the inspections reported sick or injured animals that did not receive proper care or treatment. On the other hand, contrary to the ambitions of the Pig Action Plan of 2015, the piglet and sow mortality also grew from 2017 to 2018, according to the data provided by SEGES Pig Production.

The Minister for Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Mr Mogens Jensen, declared that he will study which specific measures can be implemented to reverse this trend.
