Denmark - The Minister of Agriculture studies proposals to diminish the piglet mortality rate

In Denmark, several studies about piglet mortality puts the rate at 24% during the first 4 weeks of life. These results have been deemed “unacceptable” by the Danish Minister of Agriculture, Henrik Hoegh.

In Denmark, several studies about piglet mortality puts the rate at 24% during the first 4 weeks of life. These results have been deemed “unacceptable” by the Danish Minister of Agriculture, Henrik Hoegh.

In order to try and resolve this problem, the Danish Minister has asked the Food Authority to identify the causes of the elevated mortality rate and to present proposals to improve the current situation.

In 2004 piglet mortality averaged 21% and 23% of all piglets born in the first parity of Landrace and Large White sows, respectively. By 2011, these figures have decreased to averagely 15.4% and 16.9%.
