In order to prevent and eradicate FMD in Colombia, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, together with the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA), has implemented a strategy to establish regions in the country, which will make it possible to maintain the country's health status even if an outbreak of the disease would occur in a zone.

In the event of a new case of FMD occurring in some of the established zones, only the affected territory would lose its certification, but not the entire country.

The zoning established by the OIE is as follows:

  • Zone I (Northern Border): Departaments of La Guajira, Cesar and the municipalities of Abrego, Cáchira, Convención, El Carmen, Hacarí, La Esperanza, La Playa, Ocaña, San Calixto, Teorama, and Villacaro which are in the department of Norte de Santander.
  • Zone II (Eastern Border): Departments of Arauca (except the high surveillance zone) and Vichada, and the municipality of Cubará in the department of Boyacá.
  • Zone III (Trade): Atlántico, Córdoba, Sucre, Magdalena and part of the municipalities of Antioquia (Arboletes, San Pedro de Urabá, San Juan del Urabá, Necoclí, Turbo, Apartado, Carepa, Chigorodó, Mutatá, Valdivia, Taraza, Cáceres, Caucasia, and Nechí), part of the municipalities of Bolívar (Arjona, Achí, Arroyohondo, Calamar, Cartagena de Indias, Cicuco, Clemencia, Córdoba, El Carmen de Bolívar, El Guamo, Hatillo de Loba, Magangué, Mahates, Margarita, Maria La Baja, Mompós, San Cristóbal, San Estanislao, San Fernando, San Jacinto del Cauca, San Juan Nepomuceno, Santa Catalina, Santa Rosa, Soplaviento, Talaigua Nuevo, Turbaco, Turbaná, Villa Nueva, and Zambrano), and part of the municipalities of Chocó (Rio Sucio and Carmen del Darién)
  • Zone IV (Rest of the country): The departments of Amazonas, Antioquia (all municipalities, excluding those found withing the Trade Zone), Bolívar (all municipalities, excluding those found withing the Trade Zone), Boyacá (excluding the municipality of Cubará), Caldas, Caquetá, Cauca, Casanare, Chocó (all municipalities, excluding those found withing the Trade Zone and those found in the FMD-free without vaccination zone), Cundinamarca, Guainía, Guaviare, Huila, Meta, Nariño, Quindío, Putumayo, Risaralda, Santander, Tolima, Valle del Cauca, and Vaupés.
