China's pork production increased while pig inventory shrank in 2023

China's pork production in 2023 totaled 57.94 million tons, an increase of 2.53 million tons or 4.6%.

In 2023, 726.62 million pigs were sold nationwide, an increase of 26.68 million heads or 3.8% over the previous year. The number of pigs sold in the first, second, third, and fourth quarters was 198.99 million, 176.49 million, 161.75 million, and 189.39 million, respectively, a year-on-year increase of 1.7%, 3.7%, 4.7%, and 5.4% respectively.

At the end of 2023, the pig inventory nationwide was 434.22 million head, a decrease of 18.33 million head or 4.1% from the end of the previous year. Included in this number are 41.42 million sows, a decrease of 2.48 million, or 5.7%.

Pig prices remained low in 2023, with pig producer prices falling by 14.0% year-on-year.
