Brazil will ban the use of several antibiotic growth promoters in animal feed following the publication of new regulations by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA), which took effect on April 27, 2026.
The measure affects antimicrobials considered important for human and veterinary medicine, including virginiamycin and various forms of bacitracin, used as performance-enhancing additives in animal production. All product registrations containing these substances will be automatically canceled.

The regulations establish a 180-day transition period during which products already manufactured or imported before the order comes into effect may continue to be sold and used. After this period, companies will have an additional 90 days to remove any remaining stock from the market.
El gobierno brasileño también permitirá, previa autorización, que estos productos puedan seguir fabricándose exclusivamente para exportación o ser reformulados con fines terapéuticos veterinarios.
The decision brings Brazil more in line with policies in other major international producers regarding reducing antibiotic use as growth promoters, an issue especially relevant to international trade and antimicrobial resistance.
