During the official agenda of the International Mission to Asia, Governor Eduardo Riedel and other representatives from Mato Grosso do Sul initiated strategic talks to expand access for beef and pork produced in the state to Japan, one of the main markets in Asia and worldwide.
The negotiations also involve producers, industry associations, meatpacking plants, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. In the case of beef, the goal is to include Mato Grosso do Sul in the list of Brazilian states authorized to export to Japan.

Currently, Japan maintains health restrictions on most Brazilian beef, but negotiations are underway to authorize more meatpacking plants.
“Work is underway to open this market starting in November, but it would be limited to states with foot-and-mouth disease-free status that have not been vaccinated for two years,” emphasized Secretary Jaime Verruck.
The head of the Mato Grosso do Sul Development portfolio adds that this status was achieved by the state just a year ago and that the discussion now also includes adding beef from Mato Grosso do Sul to the list of those authorized for export to Japan.
As for pork, “Since we have been declared free of foot-and-mouth disease, we have also considered expanding this market, with Japan being the most significant. We are working on this with producers, associations, and the Ministry of Agriculture,” explained Jaime.
Entering the Japanese market is even more important for exports from Mato Grosso do Sul, as Japan is one of the world's largest importers of the product and is also a strong consumer in terms of purchasing power.
According to state authorities, the strategy combines two fronts: technical coordination, led by MAPA and producer representative entities, and commercial diplomacy, which involves direct talks with Japanese governments and companies.
