ASF: meeting of EU, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia representatives

Last week, a meeting of the Ministers of Agriculture and the Heads of Veterinary Services of the Member States of the European Union, as well as of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, took place in Warsaw to address the problem of African swine fever (ASF).

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Poland, Krzysztof Jurgiel, explained that the aim of the meeting was to present the current situation as regards the prevalence of the ASF virus, the activities carried out so far and the proposals for new solutions.

During the meeting, the Polish Minister of Agriculture emphasized that the measures implemented so far prove the fight against the virus is a long term one, requires a consistent approach, joint and multidirectional activities, and considerable financial investments.

The European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Vytenis Andriukaitis, showed the commitment of the EU institutions to fight the virus, indicating the intensification of activities related to border controls and controls on the wild boar population in 2018.
