The National Animal Health and Agri-food Quality Service (SENASA) promotes, in municipalities of Buenos Aires Province, to reinforce surveillance against trichinosis in order to prevent outbreaks of the disease in pig populations and risk of infection in humans due to consumption of sausages or fresh meat products that have not been adequately supervised.

Together with experts from other government agencies, the proposal was evaluated at a meeting held last February 12 in Mar del Plata, where diagnostic techniques available for triquinellosis and possible joint and complementary actions were discussed.

During the day, the implementation of pilot prevention programmes and, especially, the feasibility of serological testing within them as a diagnostic technique was considered, since it allows to develop epidemiological surveillance of an animal population through blood samples that could confirm the presence of the parasite.
