As we head towards the middle of spring, pig producers should review their ventilation systems advises Paul Thompson, veterinary consultant to pig-breeding company, ACMC Ltd.

External fan housings should be checked for blockages and all fans should be seen to be clean and working. It is also important to ensure that temperature probes are cleaned and correctly positioned.

Any temporary winter insulation should be removed as soon as temperatures start to rise. Farmers with sprinkler systems need to check that these are still operational. Warm weather can adversely affect growth rates if these points are not addressed, he points out.
