Institut de Recerca Biomèdica (IRB) and Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) - Spain Author

Toni Gabaldón is an ICREA Research Professor and heads the Comparative Genomics group at the Institut de Recerca Biomèdica (IRB) and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC). He is an expert in genome evolution, molecular phylogenetics, and population genetics. His research has contributed to understanding the genetic mechanisms through which emerging human pathogens acquire virulence, transmissibility, and other traits that enable them to spread. In the context of the recent ASF outbreak, his laboratory participated in the genetic characterization of the outbreak strain and in determining its possible origins through sequence comparison and phylogenetic reconstruction.

03-May-2026BILLY BOSTICKSONYou said that the genome of the Sp25 strain has a total of 27 SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms), but we only found 3 in the core region. the L & R variable regions are hard to classify in terms of SNVs and may give artefactual results, would you agree?
