The hydrolyzed of intestinal mucosa of swine (HI; a co-product of the extraction of heparin from pig intestine) plays an important role as a feed ingredient; considered a highly digestible protein source for piglets. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of partial or total substitution of blood plasma in the diet by hydrolyzed of intestinal mucosa of swine on piglet performance, intestinal morphology and allometry of piglets from 21 to 49 days of age.

A total of 140 piglets weaned at 21 days and with initial body weight of 5.54 kg were used in an experiment divided into two different phases (pre-initial 1 and pre-initial 2) where five experimental treatments (a diet with plasma (control) and four diets containing different levels of hydrolyzed of intestinal mucosa of pigs with 62 and 50% CP (HI 62 and HI 50): pre-initial 1, from 21 to 35 days (T1: blood plasma (5%), T2: plasma (2%) + HI 62 (3%), T3: HI 62 (3%), T4: plasma (3%) + HI 50 (5%) and T5: HI 50 (5%)) and pre-initial 2, from 36 to 49 days (T1: blood plasma (5%), T2: plasma (1.5%) + HI 62 (1.5%), T3: HI 62 (3%), T4: plasma (1.5 %) + HI 50 (5%) and T5: HI 50 (5%)). In order to evaluate piglet performance, ADFI, ADG and FGR were calculated. At 35 days of age one animal from each experimental unit was euthanatized and spleen, pancreas, liver, kidneys and small intestine were weighed and the length of intestine small measured, intestinal segments were also collected for the morfometrical characterisation.

No differences in ADFI, ADG and FGR were observed related with the partial or total plasma substitution by HI 50 or HI 62 products during the different studied phases or the entire experimental period (P>0.05). The absolute and relative weight of the functional viscera was also not affected by the experimental treatments (P>0.05). Additionally, no significant effects were observed between those animals fed the control diet than those fed the experimental treatments on the characteristics of intestinal integrity in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum at 35 days of age.

It is concluded that hydrolyzed of intestinal mucosa of swine may be taken into account as highly nutritive feed ingredient for weanling diet. These products may partly or completely replace the inclusion of plasma in diets for piglets.
