The Meat Hygiene Service (MHS) will be dissolved and its staff and functions will form part of a new Food Standards Agency (FSA) Operations Group from April 1, it has been confirmed.

The dissolution of the MHS into the FSA, the latest measure, is expected to provide a stronger, safer, more efficient meat hygiene regulator and make savings of approximately £2 million.

The FSA said the reduced administrative duplication will result in a more effective and capable agency that can deliver on its 2010-2015 strategic plan.
