The Central Veterinary Laboratory in Algete (Madrid) has confirmed seven more wild boars positive for African swine fever (ASF). These animals were found dead in the same municipality of Cerdanyola del Vallès, near Barcelona, and very close to where the other two were found last week. These findings are the result of the initial phases of the active search for carcasses in the area provisionally designated as infected. Since they were detected in the same area, neither the control nor the surveillance zone has been modified.

With these new cases, the disease has been confirmed in a total of nine wild boar, all in the same area. The cases have been reported to the European Commission and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).
Genetic sequencing carried out in the Central Veterinary Laboratory (LCV) of MAPA in Algete (National Reference Laboratory for the disease) indicates that the ASF virus detected is genotype II, the same genotype circulating in other strains in Europe.
A visit by experts from the European Commission's Emergency Veterinary Team (EUVET) is planned for December 3-4. They will hold meetings with the various national, regional, and local competent authorities and visit the infected area to issue recommendations on the control measures implemented to achieve the eradication of the disease as soon as possible.
