Portugal: pig slaughter decreases in 2019

The slaughter of pigs in Portugal fell by 0.7% (-30,089 head) in 2019. Slaughter weight increased by 1.1%.

According to data published by the GPP, provided as preliminary data by the INE, the slaughter of pigs in Portugal in 2019 showed a 0.7% reduction in the total number of pigs slaughtered (-30,089 head) compared to 2018, from 4,214,432 pigs slaughtered in 2018 to 4,184,343 in 2019.

Slaughter weight increased by 1.1%, from 347,882 tons in 2018 to 351,655 tons in 2019.

For piglets, the number of head slaughtered increased by 2.8% in 2019 (1,341,151 animals) compared to 2018 (1,304,713 animals). Slaughter weight increased by 2.3%, from 9,019 tons in 2018 to 9,224 tons in 2019.

In relation to breeding stock, 32,851 head were slaughtered (+6%) in 2019 compared to 30,982 head in 2018. The weight increased by 9.9%, from 4,626 tons in 2018 to 5,082 tons in 2019.

A total of 5,558,345 head were slaughtered and fit for consumption in 2019, +0.1% over the previous year (5,550,127 head). The total weight at slaughter was 365,961 tons, representing +1.2% compared to 2018 (361,527 tons fit for consumption).
