Portugal: drop in pig slaughterings

During the first trimester of 2017, the pig slaughterings, as well as the slaughter weights, have dropped.

According to the data published by the GPP, during the first trimester of 2017, there was a drop in the total number of pig heads slaughtered by 6.1% in comparison with the same period in 2016 (1,300,233 in 2017 vs. 1,384,315 in 2016). From those figures 1,079,488 were pigs (-4.7%); 215,049 piglets (-11.4%) and 5,736 breeders (-37.2%).

The slaughter weights also decreased for all the categories, with a drop by 6.3% for pigs and by 12.1% for piglets.

Regarding the commercial trade, during the first trimester of 2017, the imports of pigs for their slaughter dropped by 2.7%, and those of pork by 6.7% in comparison with the first trimester of 2016. The exports of pigs for their slaughter fell by 21.6%, and those of pork and pork products by 9.5%.
