According to preliminary data on the pig population on March 1, 2015, published by the Statistical Service of Poland, the total pig population amounted to 11,511,700 million pigs, which means an increase of 325,700 animals (+2.9% ) over the same period last year.

The increase was observed for all age groups, except for the sows, which saw a decrease of 39,000 sows (−3.9%) compared to the same period last year, even though an increase of 0.6% compared to December 2014 was recorded.

The reduction in the number of sows, and therefore also of piglets, has been offset by a large import of piglets of up to 50 kg live weight. Imports up to March amounted to 763,900 animals.
