The Head of the General Directorate of Livestock Development of MIDAGRI, Víctor Rodríguez Bustamante, stressed that this goal is part of the Government's economic reactivation policy, aimed at boosting national pork production and improving the income of rural producers. "We set out to double per capita pork consumption in the country, reaching 20 kg per person per annum by 2030," he said.

According to MIDAGRI data, Peru currently has an estimated pig population of 3.4 million pigs and an annual production of more than 200,000 tonnes of pork. However, national per capita consumption is 11 kg, below the regional average.

Through strategies such as the "National Day for Peruvian Pork Rinds", set up under Ministerial Resolution 0240-2011-AG, the Government seeks to increase pork consumption, contributing to boosting the rural economy, generating employment and consolidating pork as a nutritious and versatile source of protein in the Peruvian diet.

Pork is the main ingredient in several iconic dishes of national gastronomy, such as bread with pork rind, pork rind with stewed corn, chancho al palo (“pork on the pole”), adobo arequipeño (“soupy pork stew”), carapulcra chinchana (“Peruvian pork stew”), roast piglet and many more.
