The High Court of New Zealand, upon successful judicial review of the regulations and standards relating to pig farrowing crates and mating stalls, found that the regulations and minimum standards circumvent and are contrary to Animal Welfare Amendment Acts in place, and are therefore unlawful and invalid.

As a result of the ruling, the Court directs the Minister of Agriculture to consider recommending new regulations phasing out the use of farrowing crates and mating stalls, and consider making such changes as are necessary to minimum standards.
