Regulation (EC) No 1099/2009 lays down certain conditions to be met by slaughterhouse design, construction and equipment. However, in the transitional measures of this legislation, it was stated that these requirements would apply to new slaughterhouses or new equipment, allowing a transitional period for existing slaughterhouses (before January 1, 2013) to bring their facilities into compliance with the legislation before the regulation was enforced.

This transitional period ended on December 8, 2019 and these slaughterhouses must have made the necessary adaptations to fully comply with all the requirements of Regulation (EC) No 1099/2009.
