As a result of the work to diversify agri-food exports of Mexican products in global markets, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Mexico and the General Directorate of Customs of the People's Republic of China formalized the sanitary protocol for the export of Mexican sorghum to China.

This year, the harvested area of sorghum in Mexico will reach 1.3 million hectares, with an average yield of 3.5 tons per hectare, which represents an improvement of 5% against 2019, which will translate into a higher harvest to reach 4.5 million tons, the Ministry of Agriculture projects.

The projection for the first year is that a volume of between 50,000 and 100,000 tons will be exported to China, which would involve about 1,500 producers, mainly from Tamaulipas.

In recent years, sorghum has positioned itself favorably in the main international markets, such as China, Japan and the European Union, as it is a non-GMO product (not a genetically modified organism). China accounts for 70% of world sorghum imports, so gaining access to this market represents an important opportunity for Mexican producers.

According to the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), it is estimated that in 2020 national production of grains and oilseeds will exceed 39.2 million tons, of which corn, sorghum, and beans will occupy 85% of the area planted.
