The Japanese government has authorized the entry of all pig meat from Chile from last Friday 17 April. This step assumes the overcoming of the case of contamination with dioxins that affected the swine industry in 2008.

In 2008 Chile produced 522,422,525 net tonnes of pig meat of which 136,250,041 tonnes were exported. Of this 27,845,411 tonnes were exported to Japan.

Also in 2008, the Chilean national consumption of pig meat increased by 8.3%, a figure which places this product above the national beef consumption. In this way, pig meat became the second preference of the Chileans, after chicken meat. (Original in Spanish. Read Google translation here).
