The funds are guaranteed by the industry (wholesalers), and this programme’s membership is voluntary. Currently, the programme includes 12% of the pigs and 35% of the fowl reared in Germany. The farmers receive up to 50% more bonuses. The financing of the project tots up €130 million per year. The wholesalers spend €0.04/kg of meat bought through the Tierwohl Initiative.

As of September 26th, the farmers will be able to request the funds for the 2018-2020 period.

The most important requirements for being eligible for the funds are having “10% more space” and the use of organic raw materials. The farmers may suggest other criteria for improvement that will be considered and evaluated financially.

The selection of the farmers that have requested the funds will be completed by mid-October 2017, and the first controls, carried out by independent companies, will start as of January 2018 in the case of pigs.

The companies participating in the project are: ALDI, EDEKA, Tengelmann, Kaufland, Lidl Deutschland, Marken-Discount , Penny-Markt, SB-, REWE, and ASGAU.
