The German Federal Government has extended the transitional period for implementing the regulation on the mandatory labeling of meat according to the type of farming, which was scheduled for August 1, 2025, until March 1, 2026. This postponement gives the federal states and food business operators more time for implementation.
Labeling meat according to the type of rearing distinguishes between five types of animal housing during production: pen, pen with increased space, open-air pen, open-air production, and organic production. Initially, it applies to fresh pork produced in Germany, both packaged and unpackaged products, distributed in grocery stores, butchers, and online sales. Meat from abroad can be labeled on a voluntary basis.
