The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) has notified the European Commission of the draft law on the labeling of animal husbandry in accordance with the so-called Transparency Directive. This means that the EU Commission has examined the draft law for the compulsory labeling of animal husbandry in Germany and has not expressed any objections within the framework of this procedure.

The aim of the German Federal Government is to give consumers a real choice for higher animal welfare. The first measure envisaged will be to label unpackaged pork. The bill is currently being debated in the Federal Parliament (Bundestag). If there are significant changes in the parliamentary procedure, a new notification could become mandatory.
