Just under 8.1 million tonnes of meat were produced in Germany's commercial slaughterhouses in 2013. Compared with the previous year, this is an increase of 0.4% (+35,900 tonnes). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the increase in commercial meat production is mainly due to the growth observed in the poultry and pork sector.

The number of pigs slaughtered increased by 0.7% (+411,500 animals) reaching 58.6 million heads. The pork production was almost 5.5 million tons, exceeding the previous year's result by 0.6% (+34,900 tons), but did not reach the maximum value of 2011 (5.6 million tons, 59.6 million pigs).
