The process of structural change continues in the agricultural sector, though at a slower pace. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that the number of farms dropped, roughly, by 3% (approximately 9,000 farms) between 2013 and 2016. However, the decline recorded between the 2010 agricultural census and the 2013 farm structure survey was of nearly 5% (-14,000 farms).

The fact that the structural change specially affects the farmers stands out. As of March 1st 2016, only 184,000 farmers were recorded, this is 16,000 less (-8%) than in 2013. The most pronounced decrease was seen among the pig farmers, with a drop by 18%.
