According to provisional results of the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) there were about 27,900 pig-keeping holdings in Germany on reference day 3 November 2013. This means that the number of holdings keeping pigs has fallen only slightly by 0.9% since May 2013. The total number of pigs kept amounted to about 28.0 million, which is an increase by 1.3% on May 2013.

Last year a strong decline was observed in the number of sows kept. One reason is the amendment of the German Animal Welfare Farm Animal Husbandry Ordinance.
