The Federal Government has approved the draft of a new fertilizer law presented by the Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture, Cem Özdemir. With this decision, the government takes another important step towards a sustainable fertilizer practice, reliability for farmers, and clean waterways. The central goal is to further strengthen the polluter-pays principle.

The amendments to the fertilizer law are legally necessary to implement EU law, optimize the nutrient balance sheet regulation, and introduce a regulation for the impact monitoring of the fertilizer regulation. Additionally, some requirements of the EU fertilizer products regulation regarding the marketing of EU fertilizers are being transposed into national law.

With the new fertilizer law, fertilizer data from farms will be tracked and evaluated through a monitoring regulation in the future. This is an important advancement because it allows for an assessment of the effectiveness of fertilizer regulations. In the medium term, farm data can serve as the basis for tailored changes to the fertilizer regulation, enabling more targeted measures to relieve farms that already employ water-friendly practices. This strengthens the polluter-pays principle in fertilizer law.

The new fertilizer law is expected to come into effect later this year.
