German pig population continues to decrease

According to provisional results of the semi-annual livestock survey, the pig population decreased by just under 600,000, or 2.2%, from November 2015. That was the lowest figure in the last five years.

As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), roughly 27.1 million pigs were kept in Germany at the reference date of 3 May 2016.

According to provisional results of the semi-annual livestock survey, the pig population decreased by just under 600,000, or 2.2%, from November 2015. That was the lowest figure in the last five years. Compared with May 2015, the pig population declined by as much as 3.7%, or approximately 1 million animals.
